This geosite represent the ancient crust of 120 millions year old (Cretaceous) formed at a depth of 4,000 meter below the sea level. This area consists of ultrabasic (serpentinite), basalt (pillow lava) and spilite, chert, sandstone and mudstone forming the Ophiolite Complex. Tectonic compression at 20 to 15 million years ago (Early Miocene to Middle Miocene)has lifted oceanic crust to the surface during mountain building process. Visitors will be able to enjoying the view of this historical place which is formerly a site of manganese mine in year 1900 and also the remnant from the earliest steam railway in North Borneo built in1905.
Walai Tobilung was announced as a Cultural site of Kinabalu National Geopark in March 2020. Besides providing the traditional place and family room to stay, Walai Tobilung also offer natural and cultural experiences, and learning about their belief in the sacredness of Mount Kinabalu and their original folklore story: The Sumandakon.
Serinsim Substation of Kinabalu Park is the northern gateway to climb Mt. Nombuyukong (1603.57 meters above sea level). This remote ranger outpost of Kinabalu park is lesser known among tourist and even locals in Sabah despite its incredibly beautiful river meanders through a picturesque landscape of granite boulders, shady trees and lush hills, creating a picture-perfect postcard of natural serenity in Borneo's rainforest region. Visitors can enjoy the tranquilizing view and experience the tagal system in Kanarom River. They will also have the chances to enjoy hiking along Sigunting Trail to visit Makam Sigunting- resting place of one of the legendary local hero.
Marudu Bay, the norteast coast of Sabah, is a home for rich biodiversity. It is the longest mangrove swamp in Malaysia. The area contains various wildlife including the rare proboscis monkey, fireflies, brids, crocodile etc. Visitors will get to see the beuty of sunset, exporing the mangrove swamp and have an exciting tour to Matunggong Island. Besides that, visitors will also stand a chance to see local fishermen at work to earn living, while listening to local folklore story: The keendangan (Marudu Bay Spirit).
Mount Cochrane is located at the border between Kota Marudu and Kota Belud. It is highest peak of the Minomudjal and Pinotodung Kirangavan ranges, the legendary settlement of the Rungus people. Mount Cochrane reach an astonishing height of 760m. The surrounding area is covered with green forest, suitable for those who loves adventure, and who wants to test their survival skills in the jungle. The mountain itself consists of white coloured rocks, hence the name: "Mallas Kallas".
